ArmInfo. The Armenian authorities could hold a referendum on the issue of joining the EU, and if the Armenian people support it, Russia could begin a process of "civilized divorce." This was stated to journalists by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
He recalled that there have been special relations between the Armenian and Russian peoples for centuries. He added that if a particular decision is beneficial to the Armenian people, Russia will not oppose it. “But, of course, we must keep in mind certain circumstances that are important both for us and for our partners,” he continued.
Expanding on his statement, Putin noted that this year Russia's trade turnover with Armenia has decreased compared to last year or the year before, but still amounted to $7 billion. “Considering that the country's GDP is $29 billion, this is a significant figure. And Armenia receives substantial advantages within the EAEU. This applies to agriculture, the processing industry, customs and other duties, migration policy, and so on and so forth," he added.
In this light, the Russian leader considered it right—including toward his own people and toward Russia as the main economic partner—to decide as soon as possible on the issue of Armenia's membership in the EU or the Eurasian Economic Union. “Well, for example, hold a referendum. It is not our business, but in principle, it would be quite logical to hold a referendum and ask the citizens of Armenia what their choice will be. Accordingly, we would draw the appropriate conclusions and proceed along the path of, so to speak, a soft, civilized, and mutually beneficial divorce,” he said.
Putin recalled that in the case of Ukraine, everything also began with the issue of European integration. Regarding the Victory Day Parade in Moscow, Putin noted that Russia does not take offense at those who did not come to the Russian capital on May 9, including Armenia.
