ArmInfo.Vahan Bayburtyan, a prominent historian, orientalist, doctor of historical sciences, and diplomat, has passed away. The Armenian National Congress (ANC) press service announced this news, extending their condolences to Bayburtyan's family, relatives, and colleagues.
The party recalled that he had been Armenia's first ambassador to Iran from 1992 to 1998. "These years were fateful for Armenia. The relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran were vital when our country was under a 'deadly blockade'. Vahan Bayburtyan was able to combine his diplomatic skills with his vast academic knowledge, which became an important prerequisite for the formation, development, and strengthening of Armenian-Iranian relations," the ANC recalled.
The party said that the orientalist's research covered the history of Iran and the Armenian community living there, including the economic and political role of New Julfa, as well as Turkish-Iranian relations, the Armenian issue, Armenian-Kurdish relations, and other areas.
