RA NA speaker sues ex-president of Armenia 

ArmInfo.  On February 5, 2026, National Assembly Speaker Alen Simonyan filed a lawsuit against the second President of the Republic of Armenia, Robert Kocharyan. He  demands a public apology from the retired president for insults  directed at him and compensation in the amount of 1 million drams,  Hetq reports.

"During a press conference I convened on January 29, 2026, I made  offensive statements about Alen Simonyan, for which I apologize to  Mr. Simonyan." This is the content of the lawsuit.

On January 29, 2026, at Robert Kocharyan's press conference, a  journalist asked how it was possible that the worst situation in the  army in living memory coincided with Kocharyan's presidency. A  journalist quoted National Assembly Speaker Alen Simonyan's  assessment of the situation in the army: food and water shortages,  humiliation of soldiers by officers, etc.

Robert Kocharyan was surprised that the journalist took Alen  Simonyan's words seriously and jumped to conclusions because he was  "saying random things." According to Kocharyan, during his  presidency, the army was in such a state that Azerbaijan didn't dare  attack.

"If Alen Simonyan is supposed to evaluate the army's combat  readiness, then what have we come to? What does this man understand  about the army? I doubt he ever served properly. Because such  scoundrels can't serve properly," Robert Kocharyan said in response  to a journalist's question.

Apparently, Alen Simonyan considers these words offensive. The  Speaker of the National Assembly demands that the text of the apology  be published on Robert Kocharyan's Facebook page in a publicly  accessible and visible format for at least five working days, or, if  this is not possible, in a print publication with a circulation of at  least five thousand copies.

A. Simonyan also demands that Kocharyan be ordered to pay legal costs  in the amount of 530,000 drams, of which 480,000 drams are attorney's  fees and 50,000 drams are state duties.
