Armenian environmentalists discuss biodiversity preservation action  plan 

ArmInfo.  The Ministry of Environment initiated the first public discussion of the draft resolution of the RA government "On Approval of the National Strategy and Action Plan for the Preservation of Biodiversity of the Republic  of Armenia".

As reported by the press service of the department, representatives  of about four dozen environmental organizations, initiative groups  and individuals who make a significant contribution to the  development of the country's environmental policy with their  experience and ideas took part in the discussion.

In his speech, the RA Minister of Environment Hambardzum Matevosyan  pointed out the importance of the active participation of civil  society and the private sector in the process of developing  legislative initiatives. "Only through joint work is it possible to  adopt complex and comprehensive documents that will serve the  interests of Armenia," Matevosyan noted.

According to him, Armenia, being a party to the UN Convention on  Biological Diversity, is obliged to periodically review and update  its national strategy, bringing it into line with international  obligations and global goals. The new strategy will not only ensure  full implementation of international commitments, but will also  strengthen Armenia's coordinated and responsible participation in  global environmental processes. The draft document is intended to  become the basis for national policy consistent with the goals of  both the Convention and the Kunming-Montreal Global Framework  Program. This will allow Armenia to act more confidently and  responsibly at international platforms, demonstrating its commitment  to the universal conservation of biodiversity.

The strategy will also be based on a detailed action plan that will  ensure a programmatic and systemic approach. This format will allow  focusing efforts on the right areas and avoiding the scattered use of  resources.

During the discussion, the Minister also touched upon the draft law  "On Climate", approved by the RA government. He emphasized that  climate change significantly affects biodiversity, and the adoption  of this law is an important step towards a comprehensive and systemic  response to these challenges.
