ArmInfo. For Armenia, the process of implementing the "Washington documents" must still withstand the test of time. Gor Gevorgyan, former member of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia from the ruling "Civil Contract" faction, writes in his article.
He recalled that the United States supported a geopolitically significant peace initiative for the second time. The first instance was in 1978, with the successful conclusion of the Camp David process , and now with the ongoing Armenian-Azerbaijani process. The global goal of the Camp David process was to weaken the USSR's influence in the Arab world, with Egypt being one of the influential allies of official Moscow among Arab countries. The "Zangezur Corridor" is a small yet crucial component of the Trans-Caspian routes. Its exploitation or opening would remove Russia and Iran from the so-called "Great Game", moreover, by and large, it also poses significant risks for the security of both countries. Additionally, China, a major consumer of Iranian oil for years and a serious competitor to the United States behind the "geopolitical scenes", is also becoming an object of attacks. Energy resources are breathing tubes for the gigantic Chinese economy.
In addition to this, the implementation of the "Great Turan" project is no less important. "Therefore, the central focus in the "Washington documents" was on achieveing a trilateral agreement to open the "Zangezur corridor". The Egyptian-Israeli and Armenian-Azerbaijani settlement processes, from the point of view of historical realities, have certain chronological, geopolitical, situational and large-scale features and differences, including personalities. For official Cairo, the "Camp David" process was grounded in reality, where Egypt stood as an equal party to Israel, with its own agendas and even more. Alas, in our case it is obvious that currently, according to the "Washington documents", the Azerbaijani side holds an advantageous position on several important issues. Furthermore, reaching an agreement on the opening of the "Zangezur corridor" represents the realization of the centuries-old Turkish dream, known as "Great Turan", which, regardless of its economic benefits, can potentially become a geopolitical trap for the Armenian side.
The "Zangezur corridor" and Syunik, which are part of the geopolitical puzzle of the Trans-Caspian routes, have been and remain the "Achilles heel" of the existential security of the Armenian state. This is a historical fact. Moreover, there is a high probability that Armenia may gradually find itself drawn into a qualitatively new, tough regional competition surrounding the very agenda of exploiting the "Zangezur corridor". It would be unwise to forget that Russia and Iran continue to play a role in the balance of power in the South Caucasus. Their conditional silence doesn't indicate their absence.
Therefore, for Armenia, the process of implementing the "Washington documents" must still withstand the test of time. If the United States has taken up this peace process, then the first condition should be a statement on security guarantees for Armenia. In this regard, the United States has so far managed to guarantee peace between Egypt and Israel, so Trump still has work to do on in this direction, and more. By the way, paragraph 9 of the trilateral statement from November 9, 2020 has not been canceled and is still hanging in the air. Yesterday was history, today Armenia has already stepped on the threshold of new realities, and tomorrow it be our doorsteps. This is not the time for complaints and retreats. Armenia needs a new political force, a qualitatively new process. What is happening today is yesterday's, belated imperative. It is necessary to rethink the current realities, reassess the priority of Armenia's interests and try to achieve real peace, relying on guarantees of ensuring our territorial integrity and sovereignty," the former member of the RA National Assembly emphasized.
