Nagorno-Karabakh`s status issue to be left for future generations to  settle - Sergey Kopirkin

The meeting of the Russian, Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders is a most important fact, Russian Ambassador to Armenia Sergey Kopirkin told reporters on  November 1 as he commented on the trilateral meeting in Sochi aimed  at normalizing Armenian-Azerbaijani relations and settling the  Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. 

"The length of the meeting and the preparations for it are evidence  of substantial discussions of all the issues of settlement - the most  complicated ones. As our [president has stated not all issues have  yet been agreed on, but the most important thing is that the  discussion did take place," Mr Kopirkin said. 

He highlights the fact that the sides are willing to progress toward  normalization.  

"It is important for me that the meeting took place in Russia. It is  striking evidence that Russia and its leadership, despite the  problems that have to be dealt with in other regions as well, Russia  is paying great attention to the situation in the South Caucasus and  continues exerting efforts aimed at settlement," the Russian diplomat  said. 

He pointed up the important fact that Russia's priority is doing its  best to ensure a comprehensive settlement of Armenian-Azerbaijani  relations. 

One more important point is Russia's adherence to its allied  commitment to Armenia. "I think it is a most important signal for  both Armenia and Armenian society and all the countries in and beyond  the region," the Russian ambassador said. 

Asked about Russia's position on Nagorno-Karabakh, the ambassador  said:

"In our view, the issue of Nagorno-Karabakh's status is an issue that  should be left for future generations to settle, when conditions  acceptable to all the parties for a just settlement of the issue are  available. Of course, our president spoke of that, including at the  Valdai forum. A comprehensive settlement must be the result of  Armenian-Azerbaijani agreements," Mr Kopirkin said. 

Given the meeting results, some issues remain unsettled, and the  relevant work will be continued, he said.
