RA MFA commented on possibility of granting observer status to  Azerbaijan in EAEU

ArmInfo.The issue of granting observer status to a particular state requires a consensus  decision. This was stated by press secretary of the RA Ministry of  Foreign Affairs Vahan Hunanyan, answering to the questions of the  media, including ArmInfo, regarding Armenia's position on the issue  of granting observer status to Azerbaijan in the Eurasian Economic  Union (EAEU).

At the same time, he stressed that such a decision is preceded by  consultations within the EAEU to determine the economic feasibility  of this step. In this regard, the press secretary of the RA MFA  referred to Article 109 of the agreement "On the Eurasian Economic  Union" dated May 29, 2014.  Hunanyan also said that at this stage no  country had received request for obtaining observer status in the  EAEU.

On December 10, during a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic  Council (SEEC), which was held in the format of a video conference,  Honorary Chairman of the SEEC, the first president of Kazakhstan,  Nursultan Nazarbayev, said that Azerbaijan could become an observer  in the EAEU. And during the briefing on December 15, the official  representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian  Federation, Maria Zakharova, positively assessed the proposal of  Nursultan Nazarbayev, noting that cooperation between the EAEU and  Azerbaijan would contribute to the activation of mutual trade and the  implementation of large-scale infrastructure projects.

On January 2, 2015, the Treaty on Armenia's accession to the EAEU  entered into force. Armenia became the fourth full member of the  Eurasian Economic Union along with Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia.  Today Moldova, Uzbekistan and Cuba have the status of observer  states.
