During his meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan actually hinted at possible closer cooperation of Armenia with European structures and NATO, first of all, in the new geopolitical realities, Manvel Sargsyan, Director for the Scientific Programs at ACNIS Armenian Center for National and International Studies, told ArmInfo.
"Taking into account the serious nature of Sargsyan's statements there, particularly about the sale of weapons to Azerbaijan by Russia and Armenia's other allies, amid Yerevan's inability to prevent this, and that any war in Karabakh is a threat to the security of Europe too, I think that Yerevan has certainly suggested European countries to participate in restoring the arms balance between the sides to the Karabakh conflict," he said.
As for Yerevan's suggestion to Moscow to deliver the weapons promised under the 200-million loan, the analyst believes that the implementation of these agreements is extremely problematic. In addition, Sargsyan believes that caring for its new relations with Baku, Moscow is most likely to refuse from the arms deal with Armenia. The analyst believes that it is one of the new conditions of Russia's relations with Azerbaijan.
"It is noteworthy that besides Armenia, another actor - Turkey - has suffered from the deals in Baku. I think, Ankara is shocked that 'political pincers' were applied on its only ally. What will happen to that country is not yet clear. Yet, we will witness it soon," the ACNIS head says.
