Armenian President invites Portuguese counterpart to visit Yerevan

ArmInfo.The newly appointed Ambassador of Portugal to Armenia, Sara Martins, presented her credentials to President Vahagn Khachatryan.

According to the press service of the Armenian President, Khachatryan  congratulated the Portuguese Ambassador on assuming her post and  wished her success in fulfilling her important mission.

Emphasizing the importance of the friendly relations established with  Portugal, Khachatryan noted the significant potential for developing  bilateral cooperation and expanding it in new directions.

"Since gaining independence, friendly relations have been established  between our countries, and we are ready for their further development  and deepening in the political, economic, cultural, educational,  scientific, and other spheres. We also cooperate closely in the  Armenia-European Union format and highly appreciate the support that  Portugal provides in the continuous development of the partnership  between Armenia and the EU," the President of the Republic stated.

In turn, Martins noted that she is honored to represent Portugal in  Armenia. She emphasized that her primary mission is to further  strengthen the already established friendly relations between the two  countries and expand cooperation.

"Although diplomatic relations between Armenia and Portugal were  officially established 34 years ago, the ties between our peoples are  much deeper and have a long history," the Portuguese Ambassador  noted, adding that she will make every effort to more actively  develop bilateral cooperation. During the meeting, the parties  discussed the bilateral cooperation agenda and opportunities for its  further expansion. They emphasized the need to intensify economic  cooperation between the two countries in the context of increasing  trade turnover, developing investment ties, expanding direct contacts  between business circles, and advancing cooperation in information  technology, innovation, education, science, tourism, and other areas  of mutual interest.

They exchanged views on the democratic reforms being implemented in  Armenia, and mentioned the 17th Conference of the Parties to the UN  Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17), which will be held in  Armenia in October 2026. The President of the Republic noted that  holding the conference is an important opportunity to consolidate the  international community's efforts to preserve biodiversity, address  the effects of climate change, and advance the sustainable  development agenda. It was emphasized that today's global challenges  require closer cooperation, solidarity, and shared responsibility  among states. The parties attached great importance to the continued  development of high-level political dialogue between Armenia and  Portugal and the intensification of high-level reciprocal visits,  expressing confidence that this will give new impetus to the further  deepening of bilateral relations.

Khachaturyan, through the ambassador, extended an invitation to the  Portuguese President to pay an official visit to Armenia at a  convenient time.  During the meeting, the effectiveness of  cooperation between Armenia and Portugal in international  organizations and multilateral platforms was also emphasized. The  parties reaffirmed their readiness to continue cooperation toward  strengthening the international order based on the principles of  international law, multilateralism, and peace.
