ArmInfo. Russia has tried and is trying to convey to Armenia that the EU has effectively transformed into a military-political union, as stated by Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk in an interview with Vesti.
"We've been talking about this with Armenia constantly, for years. Naturally, all of this was done behind closed doors; we didn't want to make it public. We talked about how the European Union today is no longer the economic integration association it once was. Today, it is a union that has effectively transformed into a military-political alliance, one that openly declares its hostility toward our country," Overchuk said.
Recall on May 29, the leaders of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan adopted a joint statement on Armenia, urging Yerevan to clarify its geopolitical priorities. They spoke in favor of holding a referendum in Armenia on the choice between joining the EU and remaining in the Eurasian Economic Union. The document was handed over to Armenian Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan on the sidelines of the Astana summit. The four countries believe it is essential for the Armenian people to determine their own foreign policy course and choose between the European Union and the Eurasian Economic Union. Moreover, A possible mechanism for suspending the Eurasian Economic Union Treaty with respect to Yerevan will be discussed by December 2026. At the same time, restrictions have been introduced on the import of virtually all agricultural products produced in Armenia into Russia.
