ArmInfo.Armenia's participation in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) will be discussed at the association's summit in Astana on Friday, May 29, as stated by Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov to reporters when asked whether Russia and Kazakhstan have reached a consensus on the future of Yerevan's participation in the EAEU.
"Tomorrow there will be a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Council, and I believe this issue will be discussed to some extent," the aide said, according to TASS.
The EAEU summit at the level of the member states' leaders is scheduled to take place in Kazakhstan on May 28 and 29. However, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan officially announced that he would not attend the summit due to an ongoing election campaign.
On May 9, Russian President Vladimir Putin, speaking to journalists, suggested that Armenia decide on its membership in the EU and the EAEU as soon as possible, expressing its readiness to "initiate a civilized divorce" if necessary. Yerevan responded by stating that it would leave the EAEU whenever it deems fit.
It should be noted that on January 9, 2025, the Armenian government approved a draft law on the initiation of the accession process to the European Union, proposed by the Eurakve civic initiative. The draft was sent to the Armenian parliament for approval. On March 26, the parliament adopted it in its final reading and sent it to the President for signature. The document was signed on April 4 of that year. Moscow stated that Russia had conveyed to Armenia that simultaneous membership in the Eurasian Economic Union and the European Union is impossible.
