ArmInfo. It is incorrect to say that the current Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) summit will decide Armenia's fate; Yerevan will continue to participate in the union's events. This was stated by Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the Russian President, to journalists on May 27.
An EAEU summit is scheduled in Kazakhstan for May 28 and 29. Leaders of the union's member states are expected to attend, but Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has officially announced that he will not attend.
Responding to a question about whether Armenia's fate will be decided at the upcoming summit, Peskov stated that this is not the case and that Armenia will remain a member of the EAEU.
"Armenia will participate at a working level, but it will nonetheless. The country's entire senior leadership is busy with the election campaign, that's understandable," TASS quoted him as saying.
Peskov also added that no one can persuade Armenia not to leave the EAEU, but clarification on the matter is needed. "Of course, no one can persuade Armenia, especially since they've already legislatively oriented themselves toward this. But, of course, some clarification will be needed," the Russian president's press secretary said.
He emphasized that Armenia is guaranteed to receive dividends from its participation in the EAEU, in the form of several percentage points in annual development and an increase in the country's GDP. Whether the EU will provide the same conditions, Peskov said, is up to the Armenians themselves to decide.
Earlier, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev stated that Armenia is one of the largest beneficiaries of membership in the EAEU, while Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has directly jeopardized relations with Russia, the CSTO, and the EAEU.
