ArmInfo. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio's visit to Armenia is part of an election campaign aimed at taking control of the Iranian border and once again hurting Russia. This opinion was expressed by Robert Kocharyan, the second president of Armenia and leader of the "Armenia" bloc, in a conversation with journalists during a campaign stop in Armenia's Vayots Dzor region.
When asked to comment on Rubio's upcoming visit to Yerevan on May 26, Kocharyan stated that the visit has one goal—to once again hurt Russia.
When asked whether this is an attempt at election interference, the politician expressed his conviction that it is, of course, an attempt. "We've been witnessing such attempts constantly for the past two months. Vice President (J.D. Vance - ed.) went to Hungary and spoke at Viktor Orban's final rally, urging people to vote for Orban. Everything has fallen apart. What was considered unacceptable 15-20 years ago is now perceived differently, for some unknown reason," Kocharyan stated.
At the same time, the former Armenian president found it difficult to say what kind of documents would be signed tomorrow, following Rubio's visit to Yerevan. "My impression is that the US Secretary of State's visit to Armenia is part of this election campaign. That is my impression. They want to do everything possible to ensure that Nikol Pashinyan does not lose these elections. The United States has no serious interests in Armenia. They have only one interest—to take control of the border with Iran and to inflict pain on Russia. They want to do everything to ensure that Russia is replaced by Turkey in our region. Does this align with our interests? Of course not," Kocharyan concluded.
