ArmInfo. A brief recess has been called in the trial of Andranik Tevanyan, leader of the "Mother Armenia" party, who stands accused of espionage, as announced to reporters by defense attorney Aram Orbelyan on May 23.
According to Orbelyan, the prosecution has presented its arguments. Following the recess, the defense team will present its justifications, after which the court will retire to the deliberation room to rule on the requested preventative measure.
The attorney noted that the defense is currently attempting to assess the legal definition and scope of the term "state secret," which Tevanyan is alleged to have passed to a third party. Orbelyan argued that the very description of the alleged act indicates that no crime was committed. He emphasized that under the current interpretation of this statute, practically any journalist who disseminates information could be prosecuted.
Furthermore, the defense counsel maintains that there are no legal grounds to justify detaining Tevanyan as a preventative measure, though the court proceedings have not yet advanced to that specific stage of evaluation. Orbelyan stressed that charges cannot be brought against an individual without a proper and sufficient evidentiary basis.
