ArmInfo. No one is interested in Armenia leaving the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), and Yerevan has also stated that it has no such intention. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk made this statement on May 22.
"You know, the situation is very strange, unusual, because no one wants Armenia to leave the EAEU, and Armenia's leaders also say they don't want to withdraw the EAEU," he said in an interview with Vesti News Agency.
According to him, Russia favors Armenia remaining in the EAEU, prospering, and continuing to develop at its current pace. Overchuk also noted that Moscow would respect any choice made by the people of Armenia. At the same time, he said that membership in the EAEU and the European Union (EU) is mutually incompatible, Izvestia reports. Meanwhile, as Interfax reports, Overchuk added that Russia would consider it proper for Armenia to decide between the EAEU and the EU.
"Given the statements and the legislation that have been adopted in Armenia today, we would consider it appropriate for Armenia to make its choice regarding the EAEU or the EU," Overchuk told reporters. He pointed out that no one is pushing Armenia out of the EAEU; they themselves have stated they want to join the EU. "They simply need to make a decision, and the sooner this is done, the sooner there is certainty, the better for everyone. Armenian leaders declare they have no plans to leave the EAEU and are not seeking to leave the EAEU now, but the word 'now' is the key here," Overchuk noted.
