ArmInfo. Diaspora Armenians must have the opportunity to participate in the life of their country. Samvel Karapetyan, the Strong Armenia party's candidate for prime minister, stated this during a press conference on May 22, responding to a question about the advisability of amending the Constitution if he wins the upcoming elections.
He emphasized that Strong Armenia does not intend to change the entire Constitution, but is proposing amendments to only one article, which could be adopted by a vote in the National Assembly. "But this is the most important article for our country," the party leader noted.
He emphasized that this isn't about his personal political interests, but rather about the approximately 7 million Diaspora Armenians who, he said, are deprived of the opportunity to participate in the life of their country.
"We all understand that Armenia is a small country with limited opportunities and an economy. We also know that in larger countries there are patriotic and successful Armenians who are ready to help their country. Why are we depriving them of this opportunity?" Karapetyan asked, noting that many Diaspora representatives could hold ministerial or deputy ministerial positions and generally be useful to the state.
