Pashinyan: Armenian border guard troops  monitoring all checkpoints  for the first time since Armenia`s independence

ArmInfo.  The border guard troops at the National Security Service of Armenia are  currently fulfilling their mission under exceptional historical  circumstances, as stated by RA Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan at an  event marking the creation of the border troops on April 27.

According to him,  Armenian border guards are now monitoring all  checkpoints for the first time since Armenia's independence. Another  achievement of the current government is the full delimitation and  demarcation of a 12-kilometer section of the Armenian-Azerbaijani  border for the past two years, where border guards of the National  Security Service of Armenia serve. "This situation is exceptional in  its significance, as during this period, Armenian and Azerbaijani  border guards have been serving on this 12- kilometer stretch without  any incidents. This achievement was made possible by an agreement  reached between the governments of Armenia and Azerbaijan," the Prime  Minister of Armenia noted.

He added that, as a rule, border troops are perceived as a symbol of  peace. Wherever border guards are present, there is peace. The goal  of the country's authorities is to establish such peace on all  sections of the state border. "We are moving along this path. In the  near future, we will complete the process of border delimitation with  Azerbaijan. It is also necessary to resolve the issue of delimiting  our borders with Georgia; agreements on this matter already exist  with our Georgian partners. As a result of this work, our state, with  its internationally recognized borders, will be able to confidently  focus on its development agenda," the Prime Minister said, adding  that the border guard is also a symbol of the independence and  sovereignty of the Armenian state. 

With the development of  border troops, Nikol Pashinyan continued,  units of the country's armed forces will be able to carry out their  mission in their permanent deployment areas. For decades, the  Armenian Armed Forces have served in trenches and positions, for  well-known reasons. Currently, large-scale engineering work is  underway on the borders to strengthen these positions, but at a  certain point, these positions will be handed over to border guards.  This can happen in a fully-fledged peace environment. The region is  currently experiencing a historic moment, which undoubtedly has only  positive elements. In the future, the scope of border troops'  activities will expand. To address this issue, it is necessary to  address the attractiveness of the border service today, which, in  turn, suggests a higher level of professionalism for the country's  border guards.
